šŸ“– ā€œIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome itā€ (John 1:1-5).  āœļø

šŸ—£ ā€œEn arche hen ho logos, kai ho logos hen pros ton theon, kai theos hen ho logos.ā€ I love the beginning of the Gospel of John. The introductory paragraph of John are some of the first scriptural verses I learned how to translate from Greek to English in divinity school. However, while its language is relatively easy to decipher, its message is decidedly more complex than its gospel counterparts. While the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke set out to establish Jesus as a Son of Abraham, the initial purpose of John focuses on Jesusā€™ divinity. The first verse is packed with theological content describing Jesus as ā€œthe Wordā€ who was with God in the beginning (see Genesis 1:1 and note the plural ā€œlet usā€ in Genesis 1:26).  ā¤

šŸ™Œ  Yet, as inspirational as it is to learn of Jesusā€™ divinity at the beginning of the paragraph, it is also motivational to learn towards the end of the paragraph that His ā€œlifeā€ (zoe) was a ā€œlightā€ (phos) to everyone. And not only that Jesusā€™ life was light, or that which gives light, but also that the ā€œdarknessā€ (skotia), literally or figuratively ā€œgloom,ā€ did not ā€œovercomeā€ (katelaben) or overtake or win over the light. Thus, we can rest assured that the light has already won over the darkness.

šŸ‘€ The world can seem pretty dark and gloomy, but darkness will not win, and has already lost! Throughout this week at work or home, remember that you too can have the light (John 8:12), and be a child of the light (John 12:36) to the world. šŸ’Æ
